Mrs. is pleased to announce our first participation in the Dallas Art Fair 2024, with works by Chris Bogia and Carolyn Salas; on view at the Fashion Industry Gallery in Dallas, Texas, April 4 - 7, 2024.

Between large scale sculptures and delicate watercolor illustrations, Chris Bogia’s works reflect his ongoing interests in interior design, decorative art and queer spaces.  Within his practice, Bogia employs many strategies and materials more commonly utilized by interior designers.  Unbridled by the confines of a client or the constructs of a prescribed space, Bogia’s works refer to the decorative and the contemporary, both physically and psychologically.

Carolyn Salas’ sculptures come from a place of abstraction and narrative with a focus on simplification of the human form – as historically seen in ancient Egyptian carvings, or in the works of modernist sculptors such as Constantin Brancusi and Naum Gabo.  Salas’ works are light and airy, yet possess a commanding physical presence.  Constructed from multiple flat components stacked and sandwiched together, the overlapping shapes give each object depth and substance, while their stark white surfaces allow them to virtually disappear into the background, playing to the idea of sculptural drawing in space. 

Uniting the artworks of Bogia and Salas offers a dynamic exploration of contemporary themes and techniques. Bogia's vibrant, textured sculptures engage with issues of identity, community, and queerness, while Salas' mixed-media works delve into notions of memory, femininity and cultural hybridity. Their complementary yet distinct artistic visions create a dialogue that enriches viewers' understanding of contemporary art, fostering connections between personal narratives and broader social contexts within a shared exhibition space.

Chris Bogia received an MFA from Yale University and his BFA from New York University. He was a recipient of the Jackson Pollock - Lee Krasner Foundation Grant; a Queens Council for the Arts, New Works Grant; a Rema Hort Mann Foundation Artist Community Engagement Grant, and the Tiffany Foundation Grant. He was also an artist in residence at the Queens Museum Studio Program from 2017 - 2018. Recent solo exhibitions include a public project with Art-in-Buildings, New York and two presentations at Mrs., Maspeth, NY, in 2019 and 2022. Group exhibitions include Hesse Flatow, The Public Art Fund and The New Museum, New York, BRIC, Brooklyn, NY; Primary, Miami, FL; Wasserman Projects, Detroit, MI; and Shulamit Nazarian, Los Angeles, CA. The artist has also participated in NADA Miami, 2018 and 2020 as well as the Felix Art Fair, 2023 with Mrs., Maspeth, NY. Bogia is the co-founder of Fire Island Artist Residency (FIAR), the world’s first LGBTQ artist residency and was FIAR’s acting director between 2011- 2020. He is currently an instructor of sculpture at New York University.  The artist has been represented by Mrs. since 2020.

Carolyn Salas was born in Hollywood, CA. She earned a BFA in sculpture from the College of Santa Fe and an MFA from Hunter College. She has attended residencies at the Abrons Art Center A.I.R. Space Program and The NARS Foundation, New York, NY; Blue Mountain Center, Blue Mountain Lake, NY; the Vermont Studio Center, Johnson, VT; and the Santa Fe Art Institute, Santa Fe, NM. She has also been a Chashama Studio Space recipient, and an Elizabeth Foundation Studio Program/Space awardee. Selected exhibitions include the Berkshire Museum, Berkshire MA; Torrance Art Museum, Torrance, Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum, Santa Barbara; Ever Gold [Projects], San Francisco, CA; Casey Kaplan, Koenig & Clinton, Brookfield Arts, and Kate Werble Gallery, New York, Mrs., Maspeth, NY; Terrault Contemporary and Towson University, Baltimore, MD; Páramo Gallery, Guadalajara, Mexico; and NADA Special Projects, Miami, FL. Salas was named a 2021 Artist-in-Residence at Google and most recently was commissioned by the United States Tennis Association and the Armory Show to create a new outdoor sculpture for the US Open.

Founded in September of 2016, Mrs. (pronounced mis-iz) is a contemporary art gallery located in Maspeth, Queens.  Situated away from the geographic center of the New York art world, the gallery collaborates with and showcases a variety of emerging, under-represented, and mid-career artists, in the hopes of engaging the community and offering a new platform for their practices.
