Galán De Noche / Night-Blooming Jasmine

Spinello Projects

Miami

Spinello Projects announces its debut participation in the Dallas Art Fair, featuring a solo presentation, Galán de Noche / Night-Blooming Jasmine, by Cuban-American twin photography duo, Elliot & Erick Jiménez. They will be presenting a suite of new floral works in conversation with their figurative photographs at the fair on the occasion of their participation in Surrealism and Us: Caribbean and African Diasporic Artists since 1940 at The Modern Museum of Fort Worth. Elliot & Erick’s work focuses on the exploration of Lucumí, a syncretic Afro-Cuban religion merging West African Yoruba spirituality with Catholicism, which has been a significant part of Cuban culture for centuries. In their work, the duo stages images portraying deities and their floral offerings. This presentation highlights the liminal space Lucumí occupies as well as the duality of Elliot & Erick’s identity as Cuban- Americans, while investigating themes of migration and transculturation. Through their work, they reappropriate art historical references from Western art to underscore nuanced topics around Cuban culture that aren’t commonly known. Elliot & Erick depict shadow figures, historically concealed due to religious persecution, using costumes and lighting. They also incorporate impressionist florals, referencing artists like Monet, Van Gogh, and Redon to convey symbolic meanings through color; linking to various cultures’ traditions of associating florals with specific deities. This tradition historically spans Greek, Roman, and Catholic beliefs, where flowers held symbolic significance for gods and goddesses. Within Lucumí practices, florals and colors played a key role in identifying hidden deities, acting as a bridge between Yoruba and Catholic beliefs, rooted in oral traditions. Galán de Noche / Night-Blooming Jasmine highlights the connection between florals and deities in Cuban folklore, reflecting on humanity’s enduring fascination with nature and the divine.
